Stylish, but fuzzy sound, 19 Nov 2011

This is a really smart looking Bluetooth headset which charges quickly and pairs very easily.

However, when making test calls the person at the other end said that I sounded “fuzzy” and that it was not that easy making out what I was saying. I was in a quiet room at the time, so no background noise.

The other thing which I find a bit odd, is the way it switches on and off. It comes with a very neat holder which is designed to clip onto your clothing. It is also charged in this holder when connected via a micro USB charger (supplied). However, when you put the headset into the holder, it switches off and disconnects from your ‘phone. Pull it out, it switches on and reconnects via Bluetooth to your ‘phone.

This means that you have to keep it in you ear at all times (or next to you) to be switched on and available for use., rather than in the supplied holster.

Maybe I an being picky here, but I would have liked to have it neatly in the holster ready for pop in my ear, without having to wait (albeit be it only a couple of seconds) for the pairing to take place each time…

You need to decide for yourself if this is really an issue or not.

Beautifully engineered and presented, highly desirable, easy to set up and fairly easy to use, 6 Jan 2012

I got this classy looking Nokia J BH-806 headset for my teenage son, who had it linked to his Blackberry Bold 9780 within minutes, so it must be easy to set up. The headset case is non-allergenic stainless steel [no nickel]. The unit has a rechargeable li-ion battery, weighs 8g and is 47.4 mm x 12.5 mm x 6.4 mm. More importantly, despite it’s rather odd shape, it does hold onto the ear quite well and is comfortable. The unit comes with a neat clip on mini-holster ‘CH-1 travel-clip’ to store and attach the unit to say a shirt/jacket or carry-case pocket. It really helps to use the CH-1 holster as it pushes in the control button of the headset and so auto switches the headset off when not in use. You can also charge through the holster unit. As soon as it’s pulled out of the holster, the headset automatically switches on and mates with the mobile phone. The headset comes with a Nokia AC-10 mains charger, recharges in 1h, and it’s battery lasts up to 100 hours in standby, or 5 hours talk time, or 3 months in ‘off’ mode. The holster can accept a standard micro USB lead for recharge, so our Sony in-car and mains USB charge adaptors can also recharge the headset [it requires 5V like USB]. The holster’s micro-USB socket is the new flatter shape, and the same as the ones for my Sony Xperia 8 phone and Logitech Performance MX mouse. It fully recharges in 1 hour, and 15 minutes charge wll give 2.5h talk time. Nokia warn that overcharging can damage the non-replaceable battery. There’s also a concise well written paper pamphlet user guide, and the usual small, medium, or large set of silicon ear inserts. It appears to be only guaranteed for one year, as I can’t find any info to the contrary within the display box.

My son was impressed with the sound quality both via the speaker and the microphone. The headset has ‘active background noise cancellation with Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology and wind noise reduction’, ‘Automatic Echo Cancellation (AEC)’ and the noise isolating in-ear design. Once set by the phone, volume adjustment is automatic, depending on background noise, although this background noise coming into your other open ear can still be quite distracting. The headset talks through a few things like connection established, language [English/Chinese] and battery charge left. The headset also beeps and flashes a red or green LED to tell you what it’s thinking. It can pair with up to eight devices and two at any one time. Nokia say it’s compatible with ‘any phone’ that supports Bluetooth Specification 2.1 + EDR, Headset Profile 1.1 and Handsfree Profile (HFP) 1.5. My son never uses this headset for music MP3s via the phone, as it’s mono only and he always has an iPod Touch or Nano in his pocket as well as his Blackberry.

To automatically phone link and receive a call just remove the headset from the holster. To end the call, put the headset back in (without the holster, it’s a more complicated manual pressing of the single control button). If you press the control button twice the call is rejected. You can use voice control if your phone is capable, and pushing the control button once will redial the last number [if no call is active]. Pushing the button once can also end a call or activate a call on hold. Holding the button for 4 seconds switches the headset off, and holding it for 9 seconds activates voice control. We keep a crib sheet of the main control button clicks as my son doesn’t use the headset that often [as he texts far more frequently than voice calls]. The headset has a maximum range of 10m. It’s won various prestigious awards for its quality sleek metal design. Only downside is that it may fall out of the ear due to the lack of an over-ear clip if you are moving about a lot – although that’s because this unit is designed to be quickly moved from ear to holster and back as required. Plus there’s the slightly fiddly operation, no apparent way to replace the internal battery (Nokia say ‘non-replaceable’), and a premium price-tag aimed at ‘business users’ – it’s not unaffordable though for such a desirable multi-awarded design. Otherwise it’s quite fun, mostly easy to use, clearly built to last in an Apple sort of way (i.e. until the internal battery packs in, probably after around 4 years use), and it’s a thing of beauty which includes the designer presentation box my son still keeps to store it in, so 4*.

The Nokia is a well made, easy to use and effective blue tooth device. The downside is that it isn’t as secure in the ear as the loop based products and at around £50 it is too expensive when compared to other devices. I would also have expected a car charger for the price. If the cost was around £25 then it would be worth considering. Not recommended.

    Pros
    Well made.
    Looks good.
    Easy to use.
Small and easy to carry around.
Quick and efficient blue tooth connectivity.
Good reception for incoming and outgoing voice.

    Cons
    Far too expensive.
Can occasionally fall out of the ear, especially with head movement.
The silver body may make it a bit obvious for some users.
Would expect a car charger for the price.
