Great sound, but user interface struggles,
Purchased the Superpig for my Daughters birthday to go along with her new iPOD Nano 6th generation. As per the previous iPOD pigs (my wife has an original version), the sound is excellent. However unlike the previous version, this new (and much more expensive version) comes with some issues which are not obvious.
Firstly, the ‘gesture control’ for songs, volume etc is very sensitive. With practise you can master the control, but then the pig will sense someone moving (or in my case, a daughter dancing) and suddenly jump songs. We have ultimately switched off the IR interface.
Secondly, the remote control system does not work fully with the latest generation Nano. The ability to browse up and down individual lists is not there, which is a fairly major issue.
After liking the original iPIG so much, this was very dissappointing.

|Good but normal ipig is better,
I already had the ipig before I got this. I would recommend the ipig..it’s cheaper, has (to my ears) the same quality sound but doesn’t have the annoying touch sensors which cause my music to pause every time I walk past! The sensors are way too sensitive.

|Review of Superpig iPod dock,
When purchasing this item I initially found the iPig: Amethyst iPig iPod Speaker Dock -Pink and was almost hooked. After much internet surfing I discovered the iPig Cool which seems to be a US name only, called Superpig in Europe/UK. The key differences are the obvious change of style, the InfaRed sensors and the battery option. Unfortunately, the latter doesn’t seem to be available at the time of writing in the UK/Eurpoe. I suspect this is because of the issues shipping LiIon batteries, compliances etc. I had to get it anyway!!
To the review itself. The product arrived nice and quickly, despite a 3 week estimated delivery. It was ordered late Thursday, shipped Friday and arrived Tuesday. The product was shipped in an outer container that had some thick paper as extra protection for the main product packaging. The product box had obviously suffered some trauma, however, the Superpig itself was well protected and suffered no damage.
I plugged it in, added my iPod [no alternative dock adapter contained in the packaging], turned it on and was playing music! I read the manual, which has been translated or written reasonably well.
The remote control is very useful, although often a bit slow, leading initially to repeated presses, which got rather annoying until used to. The iPod can be operated whilst docked, although it is a bit fiddly due to the ears, so the remote makes it a bit easier, although you have to be close enough to read the iPod screen.
When initially placed, I couldn’t get the IR functions working at all. Eventually placing the unit further away from surrounding items enabled this function perfectly. I did try the IR boost operation when the sensors weren’t responding and the unit ramped up to full volume immediately. So I guess the moral here is to give the unit enough space. I haven’t tried the IR boost in high sunlight scenarios yet.
The sound is generally excellent. In particular imported CDs needed no adjustments at all and the volume controls gave a balanced sound at all sensible volumes [I have neighbours!]. I did find that I wanted to adjust bass and treble for some personal audio recordings I’d made, however, that wasn’t too much of a hassle.
I haven’t tried the line in yet.
To summarise then.
pros:
- Great looks
- Excellent sound
- Useful control features via IR and more via remote control, everything you need
cons:
- Slowish remote control menu functions [volume, bass, treble fine], you get used to it quickly
- No battery, although the compartment is there and when the warranty runs out I may well have a go at investigating fitting one if the chargging circuit’s there
- Proximity issues for IR sensors
Just seen the same product for 67% of the price with an option to add your own battery, so dropping my rating
